Henning Rübsam

 

¨        Choreographer/dancer Henning Rübsam directs SENSEDANCE, a New York City-based dance company, presenting annual NYC seasons since 1992. He has been described as a "dance sensation” and as "the choreographer to watch."

¨        Rübsam began to choreograph in 1984 and has since created over sixty dances and has staged them and performed in Australasia, Central and South America, and throughout Europe and the U.S. Most recently he choreographed new works for Keshet Dance Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico which premiered in May 2006, the ODC JAM (ODC's junior company) in San Francisco, performed his solo work at the Roof Gardens in London and a work of his was part of the DANCING AT THE CROSSROADS gala at NYC's Times Square (all June ' 06). For the past three years he has worked with guest dancers of the furloughed Dance Theatre of Harlem and has added pointe work to his eclectic repertoire. His company's fall 2006 New York City season had the New York Times comment: " Mr. Rübsam isn't interested in empty movement, which is good." The subsequent tour in Germany in November 2006 was met by sold-out houses and received wide critical acclaim.

¨        He won the Emerging Choreographer Award from Stephens College, MO, has been a guest teacher at NYU's School of Education, Lewis-Clarke State College, Hunter College, Richard Stockton State College, Emory University in Atlanta, Marameo Studios in Berlin, the University of Idaho in Moscow, Washington State University, UC Berkeley in California, ODC in San Francisco, Keshet Dance Company, the Limon Institute at Peridance in New York City and at NYC's La Guardia High School for Performing Arts (the "Fame" school), UNITEC in Auckland - New Zealand, Ballet Moderno de Guatemala, Tanzcompagnie Giessen, Ballett Kaiserslautern, and at Ballett Kassel in Germany.  

¨        He was on the faculty of Ballet Arts in NYC and has been a guest lecturer at his alma mater, The Juilliard School, to which he transferred from The Hamburg Opera Ballet School in his native Germany. He started his early ballet training with Hiltrud Franck, Carolyn Bognar, and Andre Doutreval. Last April he was named RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER of the Hartford City Ballet, where a work of his will be presented in February 2007. He joined the Juilliard School Evening Division faculty in fall 2006 where his course "The Artistry of Dance – How to watch with understanding and joy" has garnered much praise and which has led to the expansion of his teaching schedule for the upcoming academic year

¨        As a performer he has toured internationally with the Limon Dance Company, Duncan Macfarland's DanceArtCompany, and was a member of Alwin Nikolais/Murray Louis Dance. 

¨        He counts Carolyn Bognar and Martha Hill among his mentors and is a vice president of the Martha Hill Dance Fund and a writer on dance and the arts.
